Introduction
The purpose of this page is to show the level of curtailment for wind farms in the UK with respect to their type (onshore or offshore). Alongside this, it shows the energy yield and subsequently the capacity factor for each wind farm.
Hopefully, it leads to some good insights into the productivity of offshore wind farms their comparatively low curtailment next to the comparatively enormous energy yields.
If there's one thing you can take away from this, it's that offshore wind farms are huge. If your perception of offshore wind farms has been informed by driving past wind farms on the motorway and just assuming that all wind farms are the same (onshore or offshore), then you're in for a surprise. My investigation into wind farm curtailment piqued my interest in the productivity of offshore wind farms, so I decided to investigate by performing post-construction yield assessments. It's been a while since I did them, but I think I've broadly remembered how to do them from my time at RES.
What's an energy yield?
Energy yields with wind farms refer to the amount of electrical energy that can be produced by a wind farm over a given period, usually a year.
Before a wind farm is built, pre-construction yield assessments are performed to determine the energy yield of the wind farm. Pre-construction yield assessments are used to inform the design of the wind farm and to determine the economic viability of the project. After some time has passed and the wind farm has been operating for a number of months, the energy yield of a wind farm can be assessed using real operational data. This is called a post-construction yield assessment, and it helps to highlight where losses are occuring and provide a more accurate picture of the energy yield of the wind farm. Alongside many other techniques, it helps wind farm owners understand their assets and make informed decisions about their operation.
What's a capacity factor?
Capacity factor is a measure of the actual output of an electricity-generating plant or system compared to its maximum potential output over a specific period of time, usually a year. It is expressed as a percentage and calculated by dividing the actual energy output of the plant by its maximum possible output if it were operating at full capacity over the same period of time. For example, if a wind farm has a maximum potential output of 1000 MWh and it produces 500MWh over a year, its capacity factor would be 50%.
The backstory: Why am I looking at energy yields?
Curtailment
In my own time, I've been looking to see where and why curtailment was happening. In the map below, you can see a rather alarming display of curtailment as a proportion of annual energy production. In this analysis, I've assumed that curtailment which occured for the most recent 2 years is representative for future curtailment. Things do change, and as an example, the curtailment at Whitelee has dropped in the last 2 years. Whitelee used to feature heavily when the word 'curtailment' was mentioned, but it's now very much out of the top 10. That's very interesting, and I might take a look at that in the future. The map shows how curtailment is focused in Scotland, but it doesn't tell us the whole story.
Note: The modelling itself for the energy yield has used more than 30 years of weather data and all the generation data I can get my hands on.
At first glance, it looks quite shocking how much energy (as a proportion of annual production) is being wasted by some wind farms in Scotland. But on the other hand, there is some heartening information. Barring Beatrice and Moray East, curtailment for offshore wind farms is comparatively low.
The next section will show you how vastly greater the yields are for offshore wind farms compared to onshore wind farms. This is relevant because the wind farms with the highest curtailment are onshore wind farms which produce the least energy in the grand scheme of things.
Offshore Wind Farms are huge
The plot below shows what the typical year's production is for each wind farm that I've been able to find data for. The wind farms are sorted by their annual energy yield, with the largest wind farms at the top. Can you see a theme?
Offshore wind farms don't just create more energy because they are bigger. You also get more energy from offshore wind farms compared to onshore wind farms for every MW of capacity installed. Offshore wind farms are more productive than onshore wind farms by almost a factor of 2. It's worth bearing in mind that Dogger Bank A, B, and C will have a combined capacity of 3.6GW, which is 3 times the current size of Hornsea 1.
Peering further into the future, look at the productivity of Hywind Scotland, which is a floating wind farm.
Curtailment and Capacity Factor
Bringing it all together, I've placed a scatter chart below showing the relationship between curtailment and capacity factor. What is striking to me is the clear separation between onshore and offshore wind farms. On the bottom right of the plot is the cluster of offshore wind farms which include some of our most productive wind farms: Hornsea 2, Galloper, Dudgeon etc. Further over to the left, we can see the onshore wind farms, which are generally less productive and have higher curtailment.
Conclusion
I don't want to delve into the reasons why offshore wind farms are curtailed less and are more productive than onshore wind farms. If you want to have a look, please look at my other post here. The data laid out above tells us that both of these things are true. The UK is investing heavily into offshore wind, and with that, there has been some speculation about the levels of curtialment that we might see.
It's apparent (as far as I can see), that offshore wind does not suffer from the same levels of curtailment as onshore wind.
There's also some indication of the magnitude of the energy available from future offshore wind farm deployments.
